Here are some of us, stressing out daily about how to tackle climate change, how to save future generations, how to save whole countries and nations who are already facing poverty and starvation… and fashion deals with it all by using more linen and shorter sleeves. At least I assume that’s what cruise fashion means – maybe I misunderstood and it’s a fashion term for walking everywhere and building dykes in your spare time…

For those of you who don’t follow the movements of Tony Benn (the great) Burford is one of a number of socialist days out around the country: the others are Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival, the Chainmakers, Burston strike school, and a few more. Which will come back to me some time I expect.
I’m never sure whether to be gladdened or depressed by these outings. There was a debate, with a panel, as usual, drawn entirely from the left. I know, I know, there are so many arguments on the left that you can still get a good argument out of it, but all the same, I’d like to actually hear a meaningful debate, no? Outside were the usual scattering of tables. Lots of anarchists (I tell you, the anarchists are on the move, we should all be watching out) and then someone wanting the Land Value Tax, a couple of Quakers, god bless them, the Green Party and the co-op. I was there early, but it was so not crowded… Mainly, to be honest, it leaves me depressed, though I long to feel swept up. Tolpuddle is better – there’s actually a party vibe, the march is lovely, the singing is good. And, most important of all, there are loads of people there. Nothing worst than a celebration with no people.
